Attractions in Southampton

Southampton is a busy seaport located 87 miles southwest of London. Central to shipping operations since the year 1017, it is no surprise that the attractions in this city mainly relate to its various involvements with the maritime industry. The Pilgrims first embarked on their journey to the North American shores from Southampton in 1620 and a tower commemorating this milestone can be visited on the Western Esplanade. Somewhat later, the Titanic began her ill-fated journey from this port which resulted in one of the largest maritime disasters in history.

Southampton is home to a Maritime Museum which is lodged in a 14th-century warehouse, which is itself a marvel. Constructed of stone and completed with a timbered roof, the warehouse contains a comprehensive collection detailing Southampton's history as a seaport. Perhaps most impressive among the relics are the artifacts relating to the luxurious ocean liners for which Southampton was the home port. The Titanic was partially constructed here and many of her crew members hailed from Southampton. The most-visited exhibit in the museum is the one which deals with Southampton's role in the construction and launch of this storied vessel.

Visitors wishing to sample English country estate life have a marvelous opportunity to do so with a visit to Broadlands. The ancestral home of the Mountbattens possesses lovely gardens, graceful mid-Georgian architecture, and unique works of art. The estate is located only a short drive from Southampton's convenient downtown area and should certainly not be missed.

Most travelers to Southampton make some time to visit the Ocean Village. Home to various restaurants and touristy shops, Ocean Village is a great place to while away an afternoon or an evening. The various offerings here even include the occasional rave party and the Royal Southampton Yacht Club.

Holyrood Church is a fascinating destination for those who love British history. A church has been located on this site since at least 1554. Although the current structure is more or less a shell since having been bombed in World War II, it is nonetheless worth a visit for its memorial to the merchant navy.
