Getting to Southampton
Airport Southampton has its own international airport serving 40 destinations courtesy of 14 airlines. It has the closest plane-to-train link of any European airport with frequent services to the city centre (7 minute journey time), London Waterloo station (Terminus for the Eurostar services), Bournemouth, Oxford and the rest of the British rail network. Prices for a single journey start from £2.40. Three bus operators offer an airport to city centre service including the regular 101 service operated by First Southampton. The journey time by taxi into the city takes approximately 10 minutes. Checkercars taxi service is located in the main concourse opposite the arrivals hall and operates 24 hours a day. Public transport Southampton public transport consists mainly of buses. First Group buses offer unlimited travel anywhere in Southampton-Day Pass, £3.00 for adults and £2.25 for children and can be purchased from the driver. Tel: +44 (0) 23 8023 0031. The Uni-link bus company offer all day travel with unlimited journeys within Southampton at a cost of £2.00. They also provide a free bus service between the main railway station and port to coincide with arrivals and departures of the Isle of White ferry service. Taxi Do not be alarmed if the vehicle is a regular saloon car as opposed to the classic 'black cab' famous in London. These, while having lots of space for legs and shopping bags, are not as numerous in Southampton as in other major British cities. Minicabs are cheaper but it is illegal to flag them down on the street and they must be booked in advance.
